5 Ways HR Teams Can Use Technology to Save Time and Reduce Stress

5 Ways HR Teams Can Use Technology to Save Time and Reduce StressHuman resources professionals are typically advocates of employee wellness in the workplace. However, whos championing the well-being of HR personnel and looking for ways to help them save time and be mora efficient in their work? Why bother? you might ask. It turns out that the majority of human resources employees are buried in a ton of work, and often experience stress and burnout. The biggest survey of HR professionals conducted by People Management revealed that 37% of those who work in HR feel extremely overwhelmed at least four times per month or at least once a week. Another 50% said they feel stressed at least once a month. The survey also revealed that 44% of HR personnel think their work has a negative effect on their mental health, while 38% said it has a negative impact on their physical wellbeing.Clearly, HR teams need tools to help them save time and be more efficient in their day-to-day responsibilities. Th ough it looks like the numbers paint gloom and doom, theres a silver lining. According to the same survey, 56% of HR professionals feel automation will have a positive impact on their productivity. With the many technologies and Human Capital Management Systems (HCMS) available today, it would be a waste not to take advantage of them, especially if they will greatly benefit your HR team. Here are 5 ways technology can help HR teams save time and minimize stress1. Automates Complicated and Error-Prone Payroll ProcessesEmployees look forward to receiving their paychecks. What they may not know is that those working in HR rarely look forward to payroll preparation. It remains one of the heaviest strains in their workload. Additionally, payroll is one of the most meticulous HR tasks, requiring 100% accuracy and compliance with different regulations.Payroll automation technologies can significantly reduce the stress associated with your payroll processes. Automating your payroll eliminates complicated traditional processes, and the likelihood of errors. In fact, according to the American Payroll Association, using payroll automation can reduce the cost of payroll preparation by 80% by reducing errors in paychecks and invoices.Payroll automation can also simplify complicated payroll tasks such as determining rates for regular and overtime hours, entitlements, wage increases, and relocations.Using robust timekeeping software that ties in with your payroll can also help HR teams save time. It eliminates the need to manually go through timesheets.2. Empowers HR Teams for Easy befolgung ManagementAmong the many tasks HR teams are responsible for, compliance management often comes within a tight timeframe, making it difficult to meet deadlines and avoid penalties. With a Human Capital Management System, HR professionals can set up alerts to prompt them when employees are approaching overtime hours or benefits eligibility. Automating this process also ensures a company stays compliant with the ACA (Affordable Care Act) and FLSA (Fair Labor Standards Act) regulations.3. Provides Convenient Access to Critical ReportsDid you know that according to the Workforce Institute, 81% of employees work outside regular hours? Additionally, 63% of employees say they continue to work off the clock even if it violates company policy. It is the responsibility of the HR department to catch these operational anomalies. Given that the workforce is a companys biggest and most costly asset, HR professionals are expected to plan, measure, and optimize its performance and productivity.Once again, this is easier said than done if HR teams continue to perform this task manually. Creating reportage consumes a lot of time. For an HR team that is already overworked, this is bad news.Technology such as a timekeeping software gives HR teams access to in-depth reporting options with just a few clicks. Using comprehensive software, HR professionals can easily pinpoint various productiv ity and performance areas that need improving. They can also customize dashboards and analytics for on-the-fly, ad hoc reports to identify leaks in an organizations operations, or even predict eignung complications before they happen.4. Easily Define Specific Performance MetricsOne mistake companies make when doing performance appraisals is using a blanket set of metrics for everyone in the company. The reality is, with a diverse and nuanced workforce, key performance indicators should be tailored to accommodate this diversity.Today, HR experts agree that HR teams should be able to define three levels of review profiles (1) organization-specific review profiles (2) group-specific review profiles and (3) individual-specific review profiles. The benefit of using an HCM software for this purpose is that it allows efficient and effective tools for recording and disseminating information to match the differences across these performance metrics. The collected information allows managers t o document performance and specifically identify areas of improvement during appraisals customized to their subordinates specific needs.Advanced technologies even allow for the creation of a self-service feature where employees can have instant, online access to their own performance metrics, including on-demand training. This empowers employees to suggest their own career development path and create solutions to challenges they encounter.5. Constantly Get Employee Feedback to Boost Engagement and Strengthen RetentionDo you think sending out employee feedback surveys and organizing the data into simple, useful reports is easy?Think again. This is one of the indispensable duties of every HR team in any organization. An automated ordnungsprinzip that employees can use to give honest and constructive feedback is one of the best ways to boost retention and foster engagement in the workplace. With technology, HR teams can create an ongoing feedback mechanism and a continuous progress check program to build and keep momentum, which is far more beneficial than the typical quarterly or annual surveys. Using the old school method, employees are already disgruntled by the time surveys are sent. The right tools provide managers and HR professionals with immediate employee feedback that can be addressed before employee dissatisfaction becomes irreversible, and before attrition disrupts the workplace.Smart and Efficient HR Teams Use TechnologyThe reality is HR teams workloads are not going to get lighter anytime soon. As operations in the workplace become more complex, and as needs of employees evolve, the responsibilities of HR professionals will continue to grow.Fortunately, adopting technology can help HR personnel be more efficient in conducting tedious and complicated tasks such as payroll, performance management, report creation, compliance management, and feedback collection. For years, HR teams have been championing for employee job satisfaction and a workplace that fo sters well-being while improving productivity. Considering the pivotal role HR teams play within organizations, its time we help champion for theirs.About the AuthorDean Mathews is the founder and CEO of OnTheClock, an online time clock app that helps over 8,000 geschftliches miteinanderes all around the world track their employee time.Dean has over 20 years of experience designing and developing web-based business apps. 5 Steps Maximize Events Success

5 Steps Maximize Events Success 5 Steps Maximize Events Success 5 Steps to Maximize Your Events SuccessAs a start-up or small business with limited resources, you need to get the most value from every absatzwirtschaft dollar that you spend. Even in the era of digital communications, webinars, and virtual tradeshows, there are many reasons why you still need to meet with people face-to-face. Live tradeshows and conferences are often a cost-effective mechanism to accomplish ansicht personal interactions. Butit is expensive to purchase exhibit space, ship an exhibit booth, and haul supporting products, much less get yourself and a colleague there and back as well.Still, if youve decided to bite the bullet and create a marketing presence at a live event, there are some simple and inexpensive ways to increase your visibility and maximize your expokoranvers and success at the event.1. Read the Fine PrintWhen you commit to exhibiting at an event, be sure to read the contract and understand what free marketing opportunities are available to exhibitors. For most events, youll need to submit a company description for their print and/or online exhibitor guide. This is how people will find you and many times this most basic communication is overlooked. If you cant be bothered with the event details, hire an independent contractor to take care of it for you. They can save you hundreds of dollars in late shipping fees and suggest ways to minimize costs and maximize your exposure.2. Plan in AdvanceIf there is an educational program combined with the exhibition, see what opportunities exist for exhibitors to contributesome shows offer forums for exhibitors to demonstrate their new products to a live audience, or present a seminar, Lunch and Learn, or some other educational sessionand typically, the opportunity is free. Youve committed to exhibit at the meeting, so why not take advantage of the opportunity to get in front of more people? But, in most cases, you need to sign up for these activities months in advance, so you need to stay in touch with the exhibitor guidelines and deadlines.3. Look for SponsorshipsOften exhibitors have the opportunity to sponsor coffee breaks, lunches, or some other event. See what opportunities exist and the cost. Some are relatively inexpensive opportunities to get your name out in front of more people and an opportunity to meet more people.4. Leverage the Trade Media and BloggersMost live events are attended by the trade media. Youll want to get your company name and products and services in front of the media in hopes they will write about you in their coverage of the event. Check to see if there is a media center in the exposition hallthis is where you can present a media kit of your products and services. Avoid printingput your information on a CD or thumb drive and leave it in the press room. Editors and writers are more apt to hold onto a compact CD or device rather than lugging papers and folders home with them. Man y event organizations will make available an e-mail list of the trade press registered for the event. In that case, obtain the list and send an e-mail of introduction to the media and invite them to your booth for a demo of your products or discussion of your services. Also, do some research before the event and see if any bloggers are writing about the event. You can also engage them in discussion via social media vehicles and alert them that you will also be attending and would like the opportunity to meet them in person.5. Tell Your Customers and ProspectsFinally, be sure to send an e-mail announcement to your customers and prospects that you are attending the event and invite them for a demonstration. Even if they are not attending, its another opportunity to tell them about your product and service and request information. Create a landing page for the event on your website to serve as a virtual tradeshow booth for those people not attending. For a few extra dollars, you can al so typically rent an e-mail list of preregistrants to the meeting and send them a similar e-mail announcement.Youve made the financial commitment to exhibit, now you need to be sure people know you will be there and maximize opportunities for meeting visitors in your booth.Tom Ricci is the owner of Ricci Communications.

How to Nail Your Final Job Interview

How to Nail Your Final Job InterviewHow to Nail Your Final Job InterviewThe final job interview is the belastung step in the interview process and the last one youll have before finding out whether or bedrngnis you will be getting a job offer. Before the final interview, you may have had an initial phone interview and one or more in-person interviews. Your final job interview is your last chance to make a strong impression on the employer before she chooses between you and, typically, a small pool of other top candidates. Interview Process Depending on the level of the position, your final interview might be conducted by a member (or members) of the companys senior leadership, or, if its a small company, by the CEO. Occasionally the interview will be conducted by the same person who conducted your other interviews. In the final interview, you will likely meet a number of people in the office including prospective co-workers, and you may even have multiple interviews with these em ployees. Here are some final preparation tips Dont Assume While you should be proud that youve made it this far in the interview process, a common mistake interviewees make with a final interview is assuming its a done deal and that this meeting is a formality. You still need to present yourself as the top person for the job without seeming arrogant. Dont get overly comfortable or let your guard down, especially if the environment and the interviewer seem more relaxed. Treat this interview with the same seriousness and professionalism as you did for the previous meetings and continue to sell yourself as the right choice for the job. Review Previous Interviews Think about what youve already discussed and have those details at your fingertips. The interviewer may bring up topics from your prior conversations, and if you can respond effectively, it demonstrates your attention to detail and allows you the chance to elaborate or amend anything you said before. However, if you hav e any concerns about moving forward with the position, this is bedrngnis the time to voice them. Continue to follow the same guidelines that you adhered to throughout the interview process Dress Appropriately If youre in a creative industry and workers at your prospective employer tend to dress more casually, you can skip the suit, but under no circumstances should you wear jeans, ripped clothing, or anything that feels appropriate at the beach or the gym.Review Information About the Company Remind yourself of the companys goals and achievements, and the problems theyre trying to solve, e.g., build the brand, break into a new market segment, etc.Bring Extra Resumes and Other Required Documents If you have a portfolio of work, dont forget to bring it, even if previous interviewers have already seen a sample of your work. You never know when youll get a chance to draw their attention to a successful project that will make all the difference in their decision. Bring a List of Reference s Make sure that everyone on it is prepared for their call and will say something positive about your work.Keep Your Enthusiasm and Energy Level High Dont rely on your previous performance to carry you through.Follow up With a Thank-You Letter A well-crafted thank-you note can emphasize your aptitude for the role and remind the hiring manager of your unique skills and accomplishments. It might also address any lingering concerns they have about fit.Ask Additional Questions About the Company and Position These should be questions you couldnt find the answer to on your own via online research. For example, now is not the time to ask the hiring manager basic questions about the companys long-term goals you should already have asked that question during an earlier stage of the interview process. However, if the subject came up during an earlier interview, and you need to clarify a point, this is a good opportunity. After the Final Job Interview Dont expect to hear back right away and dont panic if youre not contacted immediately after the interview. It takes time for companies to make final decisions, to put together a job offer package for the winning candidate, and to let the other applicants know that they werent selected. If a week or so has gone by and you still havent heard, its ?appropriate to follow up with your contact at the company.?

Best Practices for Canceling Interviews and Meetings

Best Practices for Canceling Interviews and Meetings Best Practices for Canceling Interviews and Meetings We have all had to do it at one point in our career or will one day soon. A meeting or interview you scheduled needs to be canceled but you mainly fear burning bridges, insulting someone, or losing out on a job opportunity. So, we list some best practices for canceling interviews and meetings that will leave you feeling confident no bridge has been burned and you can reschedule. If you sincerely wish to reschedule You had the chance to book a meeting or interview with a company, mentor, or hiring manager. You are feeling excited! This is a great chance to advance in your career and business. But then you realize you screwed up and double-booked. There is no way you can make it. Try this Look at your calendar and find a reschedule time you are 100% sure is best. Write a sincere apology and attempt to reschedule. You broke the plans...so prepare to be flexible. Show them you truly regret canceling the first meeting by making the second meeting, no matter what the scheduling conflict. When writing an email, try a template like this: Hi [name], I’m so sorry for the late notice, but I’m not going to be able to make it tonight. I feel awful for not letting you know before today, but the fact is I have an upcoming deadline and I want to fully devote my time to our meeting without feeling rushed. Please accept my apology and consider rescheduling. Let me know if [date + time] or [date + time] works for you to reschedule. If neither of those dates is open, I’ll gladly work around your schedule. Again, I apologize for the late notice. I was really looking forward to meeting and definitely want to get a new date on the calendar as soon as possible. Thanks, [Your name] If you never truly wanted to interview or meet up This usually happens when a person seems to back you into a corner and pressures you to set up an interview or meeting. You said you would, but you never really wanted to in the first place. Some seem to have the ability to get you to agree to things you never wanted. But now it is time to be direct and upfront with the person. Try this Let them know you have too much going on and will not be able to interview. Offer a way to set up a meeting or interview online via Skype, social media, etc. Make no offer to reschedule to meet in-person. Do not worry about their reaction(s) to you. You are just fixing up your mistake of agreeing to something you had no interest in doing: Hi [name], I was just looking at my calendar and realized I’m stretched way too thin this month; in fact, I will be for the next couple of months. At this point, it’s just not feasible to reschedule our interview/meeting. I’m sorry we cannot meet face-to-face but I’d be more than happy to answer any questions you have about [this topic]. I know you must have lots to ask. Would you like to meet via Skype or chat on LinkedIn? Again, my apologies for canceling on you. I try not to make scheduling errors but obviously, I still have a need for improvement. Best wishes, [Your name] If you cancel on an event (not a person) Canceling to appear at an event or on a conference panel is not “canceling an in-person meeting”. Think of it as canceling a meeting with hundreds, maybe thousands of people. It may seem easier because you are not talking to one person, but there are still people behind conferences who do planning and scheduling. Plus, you have the disappointed audiences who planned on attending an event or conference to meet you. Simply not showing up or canceling at the last minute is the worst possible way to handle it. Try this Reach out to the person who first scheduled you and was your point of contact. Apologize for canceling and offer to stay in touch for future events. Change your response on social media, Meetup, and things like Evite to “not attending”. Next, send an email like the one below: Hi [name], Thanks for the invite for [name of event]. Unfortunately, I’m not going to be able to present as originally planned. I wanted to let you know as soon as I could so that you could open the list up to someone else. I’m definitely interested in presenting or speaking on a panel in the future at these types of networking gatherings. I hope you’ll keep me on your list or we can possibly meet again in the near future. Warmly, [Your name] When all is said and done Some basics about canceling: Never cancel at the last minute or after the meeting/interview was to start Do a gut-check to make sure you really need to cancel Only cancel a meeting if you mean it; never because you just feel lazy. Control yourself when it comes to agreeing to meetings and interviews and know when to say, “No”. Try to make canceling a rarity. The last thing you want to do is gain a reputation as someone who flakes out on meetings or tries to please too many people by saying, “Yes!” to every meeting or interview request. The more reliable you are keeping your interviews and meetings, the more people will trust what you have to say.

Business Video Conferencing For An Effective Meeting

Business Video Conferencing For An Effective Meeting Business Video Conferencing For An Effective Meeting Business Video Conferencing For An Effective Meeting Rossheim, Senior Contributing Writer As profit margins have shrunk and web-based video meetings have become inexpensive, even as their quality and reliability have improved, more and more small business owners have turned on those laptop cameras to save on travel and conduct effective meetings. Even if a company travels only once or twice a month, videoconferencing can save them tens of thousands of dollars a year, says Bernard Moon, CEO of Palo Alto, Calif.-based Vidquik, a web-based videoconferencing service for small business. Still, for entrepreneurs, theres a dilemma: For a customer whos got an agenda of middling importance, should I fly in an account manager or sales exec, or will a well-prepared videoconference do the trick? Lets look at some of the key inputs, including when to videoconference and when to travel. Effective Meetings: Is videoconferencing Cheap Enough? In recent years, the costs of videoconferencing of reasonable quality have plummeted from thousands of dollars to perhaps hundreds or less per year for a small business. Even just a few years ago, videoconferencing was a free, low-resolution experience where the medium was more of a distraction than a help, says Bernardo de Albergaria, vice president at Citrix Online of Santa Clara, Calif, which makes GoToMeeting with HD Faces. It was small thumbnails of the participants, all pixelated. Now its much better. Indeed, web-based videoconferencing has become cheap enough and good enough to make it worthy of consideration for several kinds of long-distance meetings. Videoconferencing vs. Teleconferencing Video has a particular value in those teleconferences where a substantial body of new information is communicated. Withteleconferencing, when we present new ideas or prototypes, theres no feedback from the audience, says Mike Huska, chief technology officer at Incential Software in Phoenix. Its hard to tell whether they like it or theyre lost. In a videoconference, you can see a smile, or confusion. Incential uses Citrix GoToMeeting. Video lets you read nonverbal signals, says Moon. For example, what might remain an uncomfortable silence on the phone can more easily be addressed and resolved when theres visual contact among all parties. Even among a group of far-flung colleagues with frequent contact and common goals, video helps to support the human side of working relationships. We have staff meetings, and video gives us the feeling of face time, says Huska. Internal meetings are also a good testing ground for added-value features that are popping up in more web-based videoconferencing services: screen sharing, presentation sharing, whiteboarding, private chat, and so on. Video and the Hiring Process With so many talented professionals available on the job market across the country, many entrepreneurs are itching to take their searches national. With initial rounds of video interviews, small employers can access the entire US labor market and narrow the candidate pool to a few finalists via virtual recruitment tools. Of course, videoconferencing can save lots of time in a regional recruitment effort as well. Recruiters are saying that they can be much more efficient via video meeting versus getting in a car to see a candidate, says Sean OBrien, an executive vice president at PGi, maker of videoconferencing service iMeet in Atlanta. The key is knowing how to interview virtually and follow the proper legal guidelines. When Can Videoconferencing Replace Travel? The toughest decisions about when to videoconference center on how you makes sales. For pitches with considerable potential, theres a consensus that the meeting must be face-to-face, literally not virtually. Theres no replacement for in-person, especially on the initial sales call, says Huska. Once that meeting has happened, the sales force may be able to reinforce the relationship with video meetings. We find videoconferencing is replacing many follow-up visits for our own salesforce, says de Albergaria. Of course, you cant decide in a vacuum when to meet by video and when to make the trip. The decision of whether to use videoconferencing instead of in-person should be based on the social norms of your industry and business community, says Moon. It makes sense to test the video waters with clients who seem comfortable with technology and flexible with meeting arrangements, and who trust you to make them happy in the long run. Every business owner needs to find what works for them, says OBrien.

Why Running a Business is a lot like Catching a Raccoon

Why Running a Business is a lot like Catching a Raccoon Why Running a Business is a lot like Catching a Raccoon Why Running a Business is a lot like Catching a Raccoon Agrawal, author of Do Cool Sh*t:Quit your Day Job, Start your own Business and Live Happily Ever After (Harper Collins, 2013) Nobody really knows exactly what they are doing in business when they first start, even if theyve been to business school, but over time, we see patterns, experience familiar ups and downs, and the way we deal with issues gets easier and easier. A Lesson in Termination I remember the time I first had to let a manager go. I avoided the confrontation for as long as I could, but I knew that keeping this person in this management position was screwing things up for the business in the long run. I was scared to have the conversation and start over by myself again, but it was this experience that taught me how to face challenging circumstances. Now, if I ever feel scared or uncomfortable about something or someone, I can face it and know that I will always come out stronger and with more understanding because of it. Building Business Relationships I learned that making good business relationships is no different than making good friends. Trust needs to be built, honoring your word is important, and having a good time getting to know the other is equally important. Let the Nut Go! One of the most important things in business and in life is that we have to be OK letting things go. It may be hard but its the key to positive change. Releasing things actually feels so good and it can even save your life! The best way to catch a raccoon is to create a small hole in the mud. Put spikes on the sides facing inward, and put a nut down in the bottom of the hole. The raccoon will put his pay in the hole and grab the nut. If he tries to pull his paw out while holding the nut, the spikes will rip his arm out and he will die. However, if he lets go of the nut, his arm will safely come out of the hole. The tragedy is that the raccoon will never let go of the nut and eventually he will die. The moral of the story is: let the nut go! The things that you are holding dear will mean nothing if you will die trying to hold on to them. A Cool Sh*t Exercise Detach yourself from your business. Take a 1,000-meter approach and look at where your business was when it started, where it is now, and where it can go. See what things could be improved if you could lose your attachment to them and be open to change. Is there anything holding back your business or anything that no longer fits? Holding on to things for the sake of nostalgia doesnt make sense. Life and work is iterative. Doing cool s**t is an exercise in evolution. ASME E-Fest South America Launches Successfully

ASME E-Fest South America Launches Successfully ASME E-Fest South America Launches Successfully ASME E-Fest South America Launches Successfully The team from Universidad de los Andes, Bogota, was named the overall winner of the ASME Human Powered Vehicle Challenge (HPVC) at ASME E-Fest South America in Brazil. The team placed first in the design category, the men’s and women’s speed races, and the endurance event. ASMEs inaugural Engineering Festival (E-Fest) in South America, which was held July 27 to 29 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, marked another high point for the E-Fest program, drawing more than 500 participants from across South America and Mexico. The three-day ASME E-Fest South America, which was held at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), encompassed a variety of engaging activities, including a daily internship fair, a student leadership training session, tours of the UFRJ campus, networking opportunities, a keynote session featuring speakers from Stratasys and Hyperloop, presentations from industry leaders such as National Instruments, ANSYS and Altair, as well as several student competitions. A team of students from Universidad de los Andes, Bogota, was the big winner at one of those competitions, the ASME Human Powered Vehicle Challenge (HPVC). The team, which was named the overall winner of the three-day competition, also took top honors in each of the competitions main categories: the mens and womens speed events, the endurance race, and the design category. (Left to right) Universidad del Zulia team members Ricardo Villarreal, Javier Vargas, Andree Picon and Leonardo Gonzalez were recognized for special achievement in overcoming obstacles at the E-Fest South America awards ceremony. The team took second place overall during the HPVC at E-Fest South America. While Universidad de los Andes dominance during the HPVC in Brazil was hard to ignore, perhaps the biggest story at the E-Fest South America HPVC involved the team that placed second overall in the competition: Universidad del Zulia (LUZ). The team, which hails from Maracaibo, Venezuela, had the odds stacked against them just trying to make it to the E-Fest. The students, who had to start a fundraising campaign to participate in the competition, spent five days traveling to Rio de Janeiro, taking several buses, a couple of taxis, and a plane in order to reach the event. They even disassembled their bicycle and packed the pieces in their suitcases to save the expense of shipping it to the competition. Their spirit and determination paid off, though. In addition to finishing second overall, the team placed second in the design and womens speed events and third in the mens speed race. The teams members were also recognized for their efforts at the E-Fest South America awards ceremony. It was very important for us to come here because we wanted to show everybody, the entire world, that we could do it, said Leonardo Gonzalez, a member of the LUZ team, adding that he hopes their story encourages students from other universities around the world to participate in the HPVC. It was a great experience, he said. The team from Tecnolgico Nacional de Mxico en Celaya placed third overall, second in the men’s speed event, and third in the women’s speed event and the design category at the HPVC in Rio de Janeiro. The E-Fests host university, UFRJ, fared well in two other competitions that were held during E-Fest South America, the Old Guard Oral Presentation and Old Guard Poster Competitions. Fernanda Prazeres, a student from the university, received one of two $750 first-place prizes at the Old Guard Oral Presentation Competition. Carlos Eduardo Mendes Vieira de Carvalho from UFRJ took home the Oral Presentation Competitions $400 second prize as well as the $100 technical prize. Meanwhile, five students from the university Bruno Bernhardt, Pedro Mattos da Silva, Lucas Lessa, Mateus Rodrigues and Everton Vieira shared the $600 top prize at the Old Guard Poster Competition. Two students from Escuela Politecnica Nacional in Ecuador also impressed the judges at the Old Guard Oral Presentation Competition at E-Fest South America. Marco Alejandro Carrion Salazar was named the winner of one of the competitions first-prize awards, receiving $750, while a second student from the university, Andrea Alexandra Suntaxi, placed second in the competition and won the prize in the technical category. She won a total of $500. E-Fest South America offered students a wealth of learning opportunities, such as seminars on 3D printing and fluid dynamics simulation. Three students were named the top prize winners at another student contest at the E-Fest, the IAM3D Impromptu CAD Battle. Victor Diz finished first in the competition, winning the $250 first prize. Fernando Garcia, a student from UFRJ, placed second and took home the $150 second prize. Mateus Martins rounded out the top three, receiving the $75 third prize. There was much more to ASME E-Fest South America than student competitions, however. The E-Fest program in Brazil offered students a variety of training and skills-development opportunities as well. The events three-day schedule was packed with activities such as ASME Standards Certification mini-courses, a session focusing on petroleum company Petrobras offshore wind energy initiatives, a workshop on engineering and data acquisition sponsored by National Instruments, a session on the digital revolution in Industry 4.0 sponsored by Radix, a session on fluid dynamics simulation hosted by ANSYS, a 3D printing seminar offered by Maker Factory, and a session exploring geometric-based topological optimization and analysis that was sponsored by Altair. A representative from Maker Factory shares knowledge with students at the exhibits area at E-Fest South America. Erik Larson, who led the session sponsored by Altair, was extremely impressed by the enthusiasm of the students attending E-Fest South America. Larson, a training manager at Altair who had previously participated in E-Fests in the United States, observed that while students in the U.S. tend to be used to people from industry talking to them at student conferences like these, down here, the students are so much more engaged because Im guessing I dont think they get this kind of attention from organizations like ASME or Siemens or Altair or GrabCAD. They dont see that, so theyre even more engaged down here. I think thats really cool. For more information on the ASME E-Fest program, visit https://efests.asme.org.

Job Search Etiquette Everyone Should Know and Follow

Job Search Etiquette Everyone Should Know and Follow Job Search Etiquette Everyone Should Know and Follow 6 To make a positive first (and lasting!) impression on the hiring manager and everyone else involved in the process, youll want to put your best foot forward and present yourself as a highly professional candidate. To do that, youll need to practice these basic job search etiquette rules: 1. Notify references. Be both polite and smart by asking people to serve as references rather than assuming they’d be happy to do so. Such contact provides the opportunity to mention any specifics relevant to the position you’re seeking and to judge the person’s attitude toward helping out (enthusiastic references strengthen your candidacy). 2. Mind the time. Being there for your scheduled appointment should be a no-brainer, but things like traffic, illness, and other unexpected events do happen on occasion. Notify the potential employer immediately in such instances. Also, watch the other end of the spectrum. Arriving more than 10 minutes early can throw your interviewers off track or force an unprepared staff member to uncomfortably “babysit” you until everyone’s ready. 3. Turn off your phone. This pointer should be obvious, too, but employers still report applicants checking messages. Shutting the device and putting it out of sight shows the importance of this meeting and your willingness to give it your full attention. 4. Be nice to everyone. Don’t limit your best behavior to those who you think “matter.” Especially in environments that value teamwork, how you treat the receptionist reflects on you just as much as how courteous you are to the head manager. Smile, shake hands, chat amicably, and use “please” and “thank you” all the time. If the interview itself has multiple participants, treat them all as equals by addressing everyone in the room and making eye contact. 5. Avoid getting personal. Even if you develop a great connection with the interviewer, don’t mistake her for your new best friend or your therapist. Stay focused on the position at hand rather than venturing into how much you hated your last boss or why you divorced. Employers want upbeat applicants who are aware of what shouldn’t be discussed (and what could even be illegal for employers to know). 6. Resist becoming a pest. It’s perfectly polite to inquire about the next steps and when you can expect to hear back, but don’t start hounding someone on Tuesday when he told you the earliest decision would be Friday. Stick to the agreed-upon time frame. When you do call, ask if it is a good time to speak. And if you get voicemail, be ready to leave a message (preferably one you’ve written out beforehand) rather than hang up. 7. Send a thank-you note (to everyone!). Keep your name top-of-mind and demonstrate genuine appreciation by writing thank-you notes to the individuals with whom you interviewed. If applicable, also send thanks to anyone who helped you get your foot in the door with a lead about the opening or perhaps an introduction. Your connections will feel good about being helpful, and you build a stronger network that will be there for you wherever your career path leads. What to Do When You Dont Get the Job

What to Do When You Dont Get the Job What to Do When You Dont Get the Job You have waited weeks for the opportunity of your dreams and to be interviewed. Before you know it, the phone rings. Unfortunately, it isn’t the news you had been hoping for or thinking would come- it’s not a job offer. Rejection stings, especially when you had high hopes and were so close to your dream opportunity. It can be difficult to not get a little irrational, irritated, or confused. So, what DO you do when you dont get the job? Here are five tips to help guide you through the rough waters. Grieve It’s OKAY to be sad or frustrated or angry or all of them in one, but don’t share that information with the employer. Get your emotions in check and out of the way before acting too hastily to the rejection. Follow Up with the Employer Once you have yourself pulled together, contact the employer to thank them for the opportunity. If you are still interested in the company, let them know. Obviously, they were interested in you, so there may be another opportunity in the future. Don’t Ask What You Did Wrong This could hurt your chances at future opportunities if you are still interested. Asking what you did wrong may put the company on the defensive. In reality, you probably didn’t do anything wrong. You just may not have been the perfect “fit.” Be a Resource If you picked up on some needs that the company has during the interview or hiring process, offer your assistance. If you have connections or information that may be of use, it may be worth sharing and will make an impression on the employer. Continue to be Proactive in Your Job Search Don’t give up because you didn’t get the job, even if it was your dream job. How Data Analysts Can Improve Healthcares Bottom Line

How Data Analysts Can Improve Healthcares Bottom Line How Data Analysts Can Improve Healthcares Bottom Line How Data Analysts Can Improve Healthcares Bottom Line Boerner In your hospital right now, theres a patient getting ready to be discharged thats already on the path back to the hospital. Thats because theres some marker, some problem in his results, thats sowing the seeds for a preventable readmission and possibly a ding from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. But to find that thing that would prevent the readmission and consequences from CMS, you have to wade through a dizzying amount of data in your electronic medical records. And unfortunately, most organizations, whether big or small, simply arent prepared to do it. In an environment of ever-growing regulation, value-based payments and accountable care organizations, data isnt just an issue of performance. Itsan issue that impacts the bottom line. Data Analysts to the Rescue Thats where data analysts come in and thats exactly why you need to start hiring for data aggregation, says Mike Garzone, solutions director the Advanced Technology division of CTG Health Solutions, a healthcare IT and business solutions consulting company in Dallas. When the data can tell me that a patient in a bed today has a high probability of returning in September, I want to know about it now, he says. And to do that, you need to have and train data analysts. Differentiating Data and Information Data and information are often thought of together, but in fact theyre not the same thing. Data is a list of facts; it takes a data analyst to cull through the static to produce intelligible information that you can use to improve care in reimbursements. In order for clinical data to be effective, it must be precise and consistent across all enterprise computer systems. The Data Analyst Role Data analysts cleanse, transform, and model data to create information. They can also play another role as data stewards. In this role, they transform information as they create and maintain data definitions in metadata registries to promote quality and consistency. Think of them as your own catchers in the rye who catch important data that can save patients from readmissions, infections and overuse all the things that the CMS is working hard to reduce. Getting Ahead of the Data Curve Theres another frontier after Meaningful Use and ICD-10, says Dayna Sessa, principal of New York-based Datanomy Group, which creates meaningful healthcare IT programs, including data aggregation, for medical centers. You want to be ahead of it, creating a more efficient hospital out of the EMR system youre spending so much money on. This may seem like a stretch. After all, Sessa says that most providers in private practice already feel overwhelmed by the push to install electronic health records. They simply want to practice medicine, not deal with data aggregation. But if you find the right person on your team or hire the right additional staff it could save you money in the long run. Outsource or Staff Up? If youre a small medical practice, hiring another person may not be possible as data analyst. So should you outsource? Garzone doesnt think so. The data, he says, often means nothing if the staff isnt motivated to act on it. And that takes someone on staff to explain why it matters beyond the fact that it will save you money. When data quality initiatives come out of IT, theyre seen as an IT thing, he says. Ideally, you need someone whos part of the organization to drive quality. They have to not only perform the role of data analysis, they have to be an evangelist for it. Finding a Data Analyst The good news is that your data analyst might already be on staff. Look to department managers and the quality department first, says Garzone. The quality department gets this, he says. Theyve been doing this for a while now, but on paper. These may be nurse case managers who deal with quality issues every day. Or, alternately, it may be lab techs who are accustomed to using data tools, or pharmacy managers who understand the clinical side but have a mind for data. The key is finding someone who can think deductively and identify patterns in what seem like random events. How to Hire a Data Analyst Sessa, who hires data analysts for her company, confirms that the best approach is to look for someone whos familiar with data and medicine. They might have a background like hers, in biomedical engineering. Or they might have a background in medicine, with an interest in statistics. Then, ask them the preemie question. Or something like it. Ill ask, How would you go about figuring out how many MMs it would take to fill a three-story building? Or ask, How would you figure out how many coffee shops there are in the US? she says. Or, If I told you that 60 percent of the women in an area have premature babies, how would you go about figuring out why that is? If the candidate starts running through data points race, median income, smoking habits, asbestos, etc. she knows she has a winner. Its not about the finite answer, she says. Its to see the deductive reasoning and logic they use to work through the problem to a solution. Im always looking for the question, the data point that someone else might not think of.
